Brain and skull base

Brain & cranial care

Surgical assessment and management of conditions of the brain and skull base, including brain tumours.

Focus

Surgical management of the brain and skull base, including neuro-oncology and selected vascular abnormalities.

Being told that a scan shows something in the brain is unsettling. The first consultation is about understanding exactly what has been found and what it means for you.

Not every finding needs an operation. Some are monitored with repeat scans; others are best managed together with oncologists, radiologists and other specialists.

Conditions

Select a condition to read a short, general explanation.

Brain tumours

Tumours can start in the brain or its coverings, or spread there from elsewhere in the body. They vary widely in how they behave.

Symptoms can include:

  • Headaches that are new or changing in pattern
  • Seizures, or changes in vision, speech, strength or memory
  • Findings on a scan done for another reason
Skull base conditions

The skull base is the floor of the skull, where the brain meets important nerves and blood vessels. Conditions here need careful planning because of the structures nearby.

Selected vascular abnormalities

Some abnormalities of the blood vessels of the brain are assessed for surgical management. Each one is considered individually.

How care is approached

  • A careful review of your scans, with time to explain the findings in plain language.
  • Discussion of all reasonable options, including monitoring where that is appropriate.
  • Coordination with the other specialists involved in your care.
  • Questions welcomed, from you and from the people supporting you.

General information only. It does not replace a consultation.
